Fall seems to be the time for pumpkins. Whether it’s decorating, painting, carving or counting – pumpkins are all the rage. As a child, I can remember carving pumpkins with my Dad and brothers. And while we were carving them, Mom would be inside roasting the pumpkin seeds.YUM!!! It is one of my fondest memories. Even though we don’t “do” Halloween, we still take the kids to the pumpkin patch to have fun (because we all know it’s not just about picking out a pumpkin anymore) and pick out a pumpkin. Last year the middles were still too little to understand decorating them, but this year we plan to let them decorate them however they wish – they will have the option of painting, decorating with craft materials and/or carving them. It should be a FUN time!

But, before we let them go freestyle on the pumpkins, we will do some observations, experiments and add in some fun papers with pumpkins. I use formal curriculum for our Mister Bull’s daily work, but I don’t really have formal curriculum for the Middles. So, I like to browse the internet…and Pinterest for ideas and fun papers. Here are a few of my favorite sites…

Confessions of a Homeschooler has some super cute Preschool printables. She has some very creative ways to use the letter P and pumpkins in crafts, papers, tracing, lacing papers, counting and so much more!!! Be sure to check her out!

Fun for First has some super cute and fun printables on their site. From Pumpkin Investigation to How many seeds are in a pumpkin. They even have a fun spelling/reading game with Pumpkins! Be sure to hop over there and check out their freebies!!

At the end of September, The Better Mom shared a HUGE list of Fall FREEBIES!!!! A ton of them are about Pumpkins! Here are some of my favorites, but don’t take my word for it – check them all out for yourself!!

* Dot Marker Papers – I think I am totally falling in love with these!!

* Pumpkin Mini Helper and Pumpkin Counting

* Handprint Pumpkin – you know I’m a sucker for those handprints!!

* Paper Strip Pumpkin Craft

* Pumpkin Seed Mosaic

Carisa, over at 1+1+1=1 shares some super cute Preschool Pumpkin printables. She is so creative with all her printables! I could literally spend hours looking through her shop. I not only have the pumpkin printables, but several others of hers. They are easy to follow, use and they cover a wide range of subjects. She has a wide range of printables from preschool through 5th grade!!

Jennifer, over at First Grade Blue Skies, has an adorable little Pumpkin Predictions printable –FREE!!! She is a super talented First grade teacher that loves to share her experiences and knowledge from the classroom. Head on over there to see what she’s up to next!

2 Teaching Mommies is one of my favorite preschool sites. I love their cute little printable packs. And they don’t disappoint with this Pumpkin Pack. Scroll down a little further and you’ll find a rare treat – the Tot Pack!!! I can’t wait to use these!

Education.com is a wonderful site to find some great activities and worksheets. This Solve for x worksheet is a fun activity for 5th graders. It’s free, you just have to create an account or log-in with Facebook. A free account is worth it for the resources you’ll find here!

Even though I was so pleased with all the FREE printables I found, there was one activity I wanted to do with Mister Bull that I could NOT find a printable for anywhere. So, I created my own!! It’s a fun, quick study of Pumpkins and whether they SINK or FLOAT. Couple it with other papers to make a full unit study. I figure if nothing else, Mister Bull and the Hubster will thoroughly enjoy finding out what it takes to sink a pumpkin!

 UPDATE: After posting this fun, easy pumpkin exercise, I decided it needed more. So, I got to work and created an entire Pumpkin Unit Study for 1st-5th grades. I am so excited to use this with Mister Bull this week!

UPDATE 2 (10.27.2012): It was kindly brought to my attention that I had some incorrect information on the printable. According to Oxford Dictionary.com’s article, “Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable?” the conclusion is that pumpkins are indeed a fruit – scientifically speaking. I am so sorry for any confusion this may have caused in your teaching. Please know that I did research and use a reliable source for the original printable. This is just a tricky issue! Thank you for understanding!!! It was (is) never my intent to give wrong information or misguide learning in any way. You can read more on their website: http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/is-a-tomato-a-fruit-or-a-vegetable.

 And now you can find all my printables on ONE page!! Simply click on the Freebies and Printables tab to find what you’re looking for!! (I’m still working on getting everything moved over there, but it will be there soon! And there’s more to come!!!)
